Description

A woman pities herself and is embarrassed because she finds herself wearing very cheap ornaments in the midst of richly adorned relatives. A woman’s expression of embarrassment and apology for her poverty in the midst of well-to-do relatives. Theme: Lack of intelligence and ability is the mother of failure, poverty – it is a social disgrace.

Description

This song has a connection in a major disaster that happened in 1908 when the ship called, Alegria sank on its way to Luzon in the Balintang Channel. Many Ivatan passengers and seafarers perished including Vicente Hornedo (Dr. Hornedo’s paternal grandfather) and Andres Hontomin (my paternal great-great grandfather and wife of Catalina, my great-great grandmother). The nunuk (a kind of tree) symbolizes the husband of Catalina who died in the incident of 1908 and the branches are their children. When Catalina became a widow, their children became a burden for her because she is alone in raising their children. The ocean really made her an orphan. And because no one survived in that disastrous sinking, no one told the news but the tragically bad weather – in poetic form, “the roar of the breakers and the voice of the mighty sea currents.”

Description

A man has been sent to fetch water uphill, and to farm the hilltops; but he gets neither water nor crops, and he blames himself for being singularly stupid among his relatives. A song to express self-pity by a man who feels that he, among all his brothers, has been the least fortunate due to lack of native abilities. Theme: The unfortunate thinks the biggest misfortune is to be born without talents, for stupidity is an embarrassment and shame for a family and relatives.
